I enrolled my son then 6 yr old son, almost 5 months ago and I am amazed at the impact it has had on him. Several friends and family members have commented on how much his focus and attention have improved, and I attribute it to jiu-jitsu 100%, as not much else has changed. I see how the coaches command and maintain the kids' focus. I particularly like Coach Gino's style of giving them consequences for not paying attention or talking in class (a consequence might be sitting out a game). For my son this has worked wonderfully. All the coaches are amazing. I can't say enough good things about Garden State Brazilian Jiu-jitsu and coaches, so I am happy to see my son's progress reflect their work and dedication.
All coaches and head instructors are super helpful, as well as fellow training partners. From beginners to advanced the moves will challenge you. Kids learn moves super fast and have fun.
For years I have given myself reasons or excuses why I don't have time to pursue Jiu-Jitsu, I finally joined Garden State BJJ after wanting to for a long time. The people here are awesome, everyone has been friendly and supportive. The class schedule has been great and easy to attend. After an hour class I walk out of there feeling better physically, relieved of stress mentally and satisfied with how much I had just learned, The workouts and technical approach to BJJ has been so much fun and I can't wait until the next class! The experience so far has exceeded my expectations, my only regret is that I didn't join sooner.
Very good school. My kids love it.
My experience with Garden State Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has been nothing but positive. The instructors are of the highest caliber, providing relevant and personalized instruction, as well as appropriately leveled training. All of my training partners have been friendly and helpful as well. GSBJJ is the exact kind of school I was looking for and I hope to train there for many years to come. I would recommend it to anyone interested in BJJ.
One of the best places to train in the area. Whether you are just dropping in for a class, attending a seminar or beginning your Jiu Jitsu journey, Garden State Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has what your looking for. The coaching staff is phenomenal and fellow members of the gym are always warm and welcoming. Highly recommended.
Stopped in for some training while I was in the area and was very impressed with the facility, instruction, and overall atmosphere. I will definitely drop in any time I am in town!
Great place to train. Tons of experience at all levels. Great place for kids as well. Chris is an awesome teacher along with everyone who takes time to help out in class. Couldn’t ask for more. The Jiu Jitsu and kickboxing is a level above the rest.
My 7 year old daughter began classes a few months ago, and I can't express how impressed I am with the studio and staff. The classes are not only teaching her valuable martial arts techniques, she's learning to be disciplined, getting a great workout, all while having a great time. If you're on the fence between this studio and another one, I highly recommend going with this school.
Great atmosphere. I came to Garden State BJJ with zero prior experience and cannot recommend it enough.
I began my training back in March 2021, and was welcomed with open arms by not only Chris and Julian, two amazing coaches. But by all the other members no matter what rank they may be everyone is always willing to help out and better ourselves. If you’re thinking of a New Years resolution list, I would definitely put on begin training at garden state BJJ on there!
This is the best place to train at. The class times are great to work around my schedule. You are always pushed to work to hard and the whole team makes you feel like you’re a family. Everyone really cares and wants to see your improvement.

My twin 9 year olds just switched from another local school after training & competing in gi/no gi grappling for 3 years. We looked at a number of schools before deciding on GSBJJ. I waited just over 6 weeks before posting this review as I wanted to "be sure" & get the input of my kids who are standing next to me as I write this. Chris Ulbricht (the owner & chief instructor) has really created something amazingly special at GSBJJ. Chris & all the instructors are what I would call "jiu jitsu nerds" - they are super technical & are bona fide mat wizards. That written, they are able to break down even the most complex & advanced concepts in jiu jitsu so that even a 9 year old can understand it. Example - yesterday they reviewed X-guard & X-guard entries in the 8-10 year old class & it clicked with every kid. No easy task. Kids classes are broken up by age (5-7, 8-10 & 11+) which is a much better way to do it compared with every other school in the area who tend to do 10 & under with an 11+ class. The classes are usually broken up into 4-5 segments to keep the kids engaged (changes every 12-15 minutes) & are an hour long. Typically, Chris teaches 2 new techniques per class, kids work on it then there are guard passing/retention games & every class has live rolls from standing (not from knees - waste). Also, Chris makes sure the "coach:kid" ratio is very low in order to insure proper safety & supervision. I don't think we've seen a class where there was not an instructor for every 4-5 kids. You likely will not see such attention at any other school in the area. Class sizes are smaller than at many other schools - my kids never feel "lost" or that they "missed something" due to too many kids on the mat at GSBJJ. My kids really enjoy GSBJJ. Despite having 3+ years of training & numerous, high level tournament wins, both kids find the instruction to be challenging, interesting but most of all super fun. The staff is engaging, laid back & always approachable. Feel free to DM me for more info or with questions.

My 6 yr old daughter has recently signed up in October 2021. She loves it. The coaches are great with the little ones. They keep it fun for them mixing jiu-jitsu with fun games. Its very organized and the coaches teach and properly correct the little ones with their behavior, listening, disciple and respect. I have sent my daughter to many different programs and activities. This by far has been the best option for her. The costs are extremely fair for the amount of sessions you can take per week. You cannot find a better value for your money.

My son started at GSBJJ in April of last year and has made so much improvement since he started. He has made many friends along the way and it’s been amazing to be able to watch all the progress. We love all the amazing coaches and it’s helped immensely with our sons ability to focus and pay attention. We have noticed improvements in all areas of his life since he has started and we look forward to going each day. It’s been a blessing to meet new people and we have really enjoyed our time with Garden State.

My some has been a student in the Garden State Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy since 2017. He started when he was 6 years old. He looks forward to going to training and has improved greatly at listening, following directions and of course, Jiu Jitsu. The coaches at GSBJJ provide a safe, fun, highly disciplined and productive training environment that treats all students with respect and brings out the best in all students, whether they are just starting or have been training for years. There are students of all levels and abilities and no one is held back by training or left behind by training. The coaches take an individualized approach and know their students, and so the program has a much smaller feel to it than other programs. The kids will not feel lost in the crowd. I cannot say enough about the program, and if you are considering enrolling your children in a martial art, try it out.

Every year, the American Heart Association celebrates Heart Month to raise awareness about heart disease and heart health.
What you may not know is that martial arts are great for the heart. In fact, the cardiac benefits of martial arts give a whole new meaning to the idea of cardiovascular fitness.
With that in mind, here are some ways that taking martial arts classes can protect and strengthen your heart.
Martial Arts Raise the Heart Rate
The first way that martial arts can help the heart is by raising your heart rate when you work out. The heart is a muscle and it needs to be worked. When you take a martial arts class, your heart rate is elevated.
The benefit of raising the heart rate is that it oxygenates the blood, and helps promote calorie burning even after you’re done working out. People of all ages need to keep their hearts pumping, and martial arts is a great way to do it.
Martial Arts Lower Blood Pressure
Did you know that a high-intensity martial arts workout can help lower your blood pressure? It’s true. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a leading contributor to heart disease.
When you work out, your heart becomes stronger – and that means that it can pump blood more efficiently than it can without exercise. The less effort your heart has to expend on pumping blood, the lower your blood pressure is.
Martial Arts Lower Cholesterol
LDL cholesterol – the so-called “bad” cholesterol” – is a contributing factor in heart disease. Regular participation in martial arts helps you lose weight and that decreases the amount of LDL cholesterol in your blood.
There’s evidence that working out also shrinks the proteins that carry cholesterol through the bloodstream, making them less dangerous to the heart.
On a related note, regular vigorous exercise – such as the kind you get in a martial arts workout – helps to increase HDL or “good” cholesterol.
Martial Arts Reduces Stress
One thing that separates martial arts from many other forms of exercise is that it requires mental stillness combined with physical exertion.
Mental stillness contributes to mindfulness, a practice that can significantly decrease stress and anxiety in both children and adults.
Considering that there is a direct link between stress and heart health (stress contributes to high blood pressure and related issues), the fact that participating in martial arts can reduce stress is a huge benefit for the heart.
In addition to the benefits already mentioned, martial arts training also helps to improve discipline, build muscle coordination, and increase self-confidence.
This month, why not give your heart a boost by adding martial arts to your workout routine?
